DPS in Corellation 1

Here is an example off a magazine I am looking out how they all operate in correlation to each other. I will look at the formality and the house style this ensures I can tell they have come from the same magazine. I can tell they have all come from the same magazine due to the house style off the magazines. They have featured on the front page in a big image picture, however moving onto the contents page they are only a sub title on the page, they don't feature in another photo on the contents page. Moving onto the double page spread there isn't a lot of information on the DPS and it doesn't fully revolve around the front image band.  

The front cover shows the band in a studio shot with the typical metal rock look with the guitar and the clothing that has been worn. The yellow of the title stands out showing what the magazine is about, this as well as the band eye gaze draws the reader in.

The Contents page shows just a little bit of information of the band on the front cover it shows the yellow from the front cover being continued over this shows house style it doesn't have another another photo perhaps due to the one on the front being so dominant and they felt it wasn't needed as undoubtedly there will be at least two on the double page spread.  

Continuing onto the DPS, there is three pages, again the blue and yellow has been put onto this page showing the magazine brand identity. It shows a massive and wide range of selection of images, it has enough writing content on there also with the fonts still continuing from the front page. The genre of the magazine is obvious, looking at soft rock, this is shown and fully portrayed through the fonts that have been chosen and also through the images. 

DPS Analysis

This specific magazine has four columns, they have a lot off text in their 'VIP q+a'. The drop capital at the start off the article immediately draws attention. The use off the black fits well with the black background. The quotes, which have been picked out from the article give us an insight to what the whole article is going to be about, this instantly 'pulls' us in and we realize we want to read more. This is how the article grabs the readers attention. Also the blue and black work nicely together showing a good house style. The use off the small photo which is placed on the article shows illustration of the DJ, and gives readers another image. 

The title off the magazine has been underlined, this shows where the article has come from, and the DJ's name has been highlighted this shows who the article is going to be about. The large dominating image on the right hand side shows the DJ in a very relaxed style which is done to reflect, the clothes he is wearing reflects the DJ's personality, although it being a music magazine the artist slouching on a chair could reflect the personality or perhaps the laid back side off his life. . 

DPS Montage Analysis

I have looked at each double page spread separately and compared them to find out about the most popular features.

By looking at these images I have learnt about how many images they tend to use, most (8/10) use one - three images I decided to stick too this range because the same person has featured on the front page and contents page already. Also putting too many images could take away the focus from the writing.

The next observation was the text and the way that it has been laid out. All the double page spreads use columns for their articles or interviews. Many of them use boxes or the columns are sectioned. Looking at the amount of columns that the magazines use I can see that all of them use 1-5 columns. This helps me to know that music magazines use from one to five columns across a double page spread. When creating my magazine I will have no more than five columns because otherwise it can look like too much information which could be time consuming. Having fewer than six could make the article or interview look more interesting and something for the reader to read for fun rather than an overload of information.

The last thing that I discovered from looking at the montage is the magazines have clearly enlarged a quote from the text. In some cases they have used a quote as the title of the article, this instantly pulls the reader in and intrigues them, as the text is enlarged it adds focus to the page.

DPS Research

Looking at DPS Examples, I realized how much I would have to write in order to gain my readers interest, there was two styles I could do my DPS in:

1) Question and Answers

2) A written account

Looking at the magazine 'Modern Drummer'  I am going to compare the front page, contents page and the double page spread.

I can see that, the person on the front page is a drummer from the band Nickelback. It is a clear front page image, with drum sticks in his hand this refers and links to the title off the magazine. 

There is a clear coverlines showing who the person is and what band they are from. 

Next on the contents page, there is another photo of the band member from Nickelback, showing that he is going to feature on page 48. It has a brief introduction about himself and what the DPS will involve. This will engage the reader and show them an insight what is on offer. 

Then going to page 48, we can see an article that revolves around 'Daniel Adair' the Nickelback drummer, the article consists of:

3 Full A4 pictures

1 page off Advertisement 

On some off the written pages there are small images on these 8 in total. 

Double Page Spread, Draft 2

So I’m sitting here with new kid off the block and Indie artist Ruby Red. She walks in cool calm and collectively, with her starbucks cappuccino in one hand her oversized handbag in the other, and of course some big black sunglasses to finish the look. I feel exremely hounred to be at her Video Shoot for her new single 'Broken'. She's looking as hot as ever, no wonder she was in the top 10 'hottest women of 2012' voted by the public. She has had an extremly succesful career so far, with finally getting signed, a number one album on the British Charts, and being cover of multiple magazines for a variety off different reasons. With her album going straight to number one we wonder how succesful will she be, and what she has planned for the furture. For five years Ruby Red has had her pen and notepad out, writing numerous songs, about the good and the bad off her whirlwind lifestyle. With multiple videos on YouTube, she was just waiting for the day she would be noticed, on January 14th 2012 that day came. With over 60 songs she has written at the tender age of nineteen, she will be realising one a month for the next six months, these are what her and her producer feel are her strongest songs, but also ones that will gain her many fans, and get noticed. Then she will carry on realising. We can all ready tell that 2013 is going to be a hetic year for Ruby. With the shoot done, and Ruby taking what looks like a well earned break, I take the golden opportunity to approach her, the interview will begin. Love life music, style and of course up coming events for herself and the band. Yes, of course this was just yet ‘another interview’, another interviewer to portray the dark side of her non-stop party life style, the alcoholism the drugs the rumours, all will be revealed. 

The sunglasses came off, the dark heavy makeup revealed to perhaps cover the partying off last night or even early hours this morning. ‘Can't just focus on the music’ she says in a dragged monotone, there’s other things besides sitting down day in day out pleasing your fans we're all entitled to some fun.’ And of course, she was correct. I decided to continue with this topic.

‘At only nineteen years old, how are you copying with this bad publicity?’ Her eyes locked with me, ‘same shit new magazine.’ ‘I’m used to it, what people don’t understand is I have a soft side, people just don’t want to show that. All they want to see is yet another fucked up Indie star in the limelight. No one gives two shits about ‘Ruby Red at home with the family this isn’t what makes the news and the magazines.’

After this, she demanded a strong black coffee perhaps to cure the hangover she was obviously suffering with. Then she took out a cigarette and lit up, she dragged each puff as if she didn’t want to be here, the interview was a drag for her. Becoming increasingly agitated at the wait she has to have before the coffee arrived it was then I realised she was just yet another diva.

'All they want to see is yet another fucked up Indie star'

With her coffee finally arriving I went on to the more risky and controversial subject of her relationship rumours with Amy Winehouses EX ‘Blake Fielder’, this was possibly going to be the make or break off the interview.

‘What was it like to be linked with a drug addict and have to see the constant stories in the magazines about your relationship' She looks anxiously to floor as if her body went cold, ‘I assume you’re implying my relationship with Blake’ in a snapped tone. I nod. She sat up straight, for first time in the interview she looked bothered, I had hit a nerve. ‘Of course he had some effect into my life, but I am a nineteen year old girl, I’m vulnerable, of course I can make my own decisions but when you have the option of a something new you’ll grab it with both hands. I can publicly say that sham of a relationship is over; it was an era that had to end.’ Again I was amazed by the honesty, Ruby Red had influenced by others, and perhaps she was just a typical teenage girl learning the paths of life.

With that out the way, and the coffee cup on the side, my next question on the agenda involved paparazzi and the constant Twitter battles with indie star ‘Paloma Faith’.

It must be hard with the paps everywhere involved in your life 24/7. She chuckles. Ironic perhaps. ‘I want some fucking privacy every once in a while, I want to be able to stroll out of a nightclub and not have to explain myself to my manager the next day, the thing is they are always there to capture the crap ugly moments but where are they when I’m doing something nice? Like I said, nice just doesn’t cut the news these days, you want to make a living and a name for yourself you have to do something rash, or be extremely cute and attract the little girls, like One Direction’. 'I mean, theres nothing wrong with One Direction, perhaps we represent different things, they represent a teenage base, I tell stories through my music, I am implying that I can't just rely on my music to make my stamp on the Music Indstury, hence the partying non stop.

‘Paloma Faith’ I say. 'Don’t get me started'. Was Rubys instant reply, the words just rolled off her tongue.  Some people will say I’m jealous. But I say what the actual fuck do I have to be jealous off?’ You can tell she feels extremely strongly about this subject as the words just flew out of her mouth. Utterly shocked I decided to instantly move on. She done a sweet sarcastic smile, she new I didn’t have a comeback.

Yet again, having a diva moment, she insists for yet another black coffee. ‘Are we going to talk about my music career or not?’ she snaps at me. Yes I thought. So I asked how she felt when trying from the age of fourteen posting numerous videos online and then five years later she had been signed, and has a successful album out called ‘Broken Mirrors’ made her feel.

'I am hugely grateful for the people that have supported me'

She smiled. A genuine smile. Who would have thought it? This was obviously a happy place. ‘I worked my arse off for five years, I got the hate and the bullying from the high school friends saying I’d never make it, but I have. That’s a major fuck you to all of them. Where are they now? Well they certainly aren’t on the same pay cheque that I am. However I feel hugely grateful for the people that supported me then and are still supporting me now, that’s how I got where I am today, that’s how my new album got to the number one spot, and I thank them dearly, they are who made this album so successful. Talking of the album I asked where the name ‘Broken Mirrors’ came from, of course this was what everybody wanted to know, she was more than willing to answer, she slouched back on the chair and said ‘because I’ve had a fuck load off bad luck in my life and these was a subtle way off getting that across’. 'This past year, has been the best of my life, I know it may be a cliche but I have achieved so much, all I ever wanted was to get my music out there, tell people my stories, for me, although it may seem like it, it isn't about the partying, the money, the fame, it is about me telling people my journey, my ups and downs, and the battles I have faced in life. This is what music means to me'


Luckily for Ruby Red this constant stream off bad luck has come to an end, and we wish her all the very best and hope she gets back to her diva ways shortly.
